Fasting and Obedience

During Lent I'm reminded of a story. A priest told me he was in charge of novice priests, and on Good Friday after dinner, he ordered them to eat dessert. At first I thought he was being generous and trying to alleviate their fasting. However, I have come to realize there is something deeper, that he was teaching a lesson of obedience over ego and pride.
